The League of Friends of St John the Evangelist, Dormansland
History and Purpose
The League of friends of St John’s Church Dormansland was formed by
the Parochial Church Council in 1982/83 as an offshoot of the Centenary
Committee, to support the funding of the Centenary Room and its remit
was to raise funds “for the extension and maintenance of the church
buildings”. It was felt that as a committee separated from the direct
church finances, it could appeal to a wider community, particularly
within the village. Subsequently it was the medium through which funds
were raised for the repair of the church roof and then the church
restoration after the fire, as well as many smaller projects since.
The League of Friends was set up as a charity, Charity Number 286557.
At
present, without the major projects, it is aimed at helping to maintain
the buildings and fabric of the Church. Again, it is hoped that
villagers, who are not churchgoers, may wish to contribute to maintain a
Church in their community and the League of Friends is seen as a means
of enabling them to do so.
Fundraising is threefold; by regular
donation, gift-aided where applicable, by legacies and by fund-raising
activities and events.
Expenditure is normally at the request of
the Parochial Church Council which has the overall responsibility for
the church buildings and infrastructure.
